Changing jobs

The result: Pharmacists are sticking with their employers longer. The 2014 survey found that pharmacists stay with their employer for an average of around 11 years, which represents an increase from 2000 when pharmacists stayed at their jobs for an average of just more than eight years.

Going forward, most pharmacists are planning to stay in the exact same jobs. Nearly 80 percent of pharmacists said that they were likely or highly likely to remain at the same employer in the same job for the next three years. Only around 23 percent of pharmacists said that they plan to change employers during the next three years.

Seventy percent of pharmacists said that it would be difficult or very difficult to find an “acceptable” job within the next year, and 55 percent said that it would be difficult or very difficult to find a job with better pay.

Workforce changes

Although pharmacy unemployment rates remain well below the national average (6.2 percent in 2014), they have increased during the past 10 years.  In 2014, the pharmacy unemployment rate was 3.8 percent, up from 2.7 percent in 2004.

Employed pharmacists have not been immune to workforce changes, either. Thirty-five percent of pharmacists reported a restructuring of work schedules at their place of employment, while around 6 percent reported that their companies offered early retirement bonuses. Seventeen percent reported a mandatory reduction in pharmacist hours, and around 9 percent of respondents reported that their company laid off pharmacists.
