Adderall XR is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that increases the concentration of neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine) in the brain. The mechanism of action in ADHD is unknown. Adderall XR is a controlled substance (CII) because it can be abused or lead to addicition.

How is Adderall XR dosed and administered
Adderall XR is administered without regards to meals. Capsules may be swallowed whole or the entire contents may be sprinkled into applesauce and consumed immediately. Adderall XR should be administered in the morning because it can cause insomnia (difficulty sleeping).
Children (6-12 years old): 10-30 mg daily
Adolescents (13-17 years old): 10-20 mg daily
Adults: 20-60 mg daily

Common: Headache, stomach ache, trouble sleeping, weight loss, dry mouth, fast heart beat, decreased appetite, nervousness, mood swings, dizziness.
Serious: Sudden death, stoke, heart attack, high blood pressure, depression, manic episodes, aggressive behavior or hostility, psychosis, seizures, addiction, withdrawal symptoms, growth suppression (longterm use), severe allergic reactions.
