Biologic Drugs For Breast Cancer Treatment

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 US women will develop breast cancer in their life. Breast cancer also affects men, with about 2,350 new cases expected to be diagnosed in men this year.

A patient’s treatment options are determined by the following:

  • Stage of disease
  • Size of the tumor in relation to the breast
  • Whether the patient has undergone menopause
  • Results of specific pathology tests
  • Patient’s age
  • Patient’s general health
  • Family history

Standard treatments for breast cancer include:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Hormone therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Biologic therapy

Biologic therapies can attack specific cancer cells with fewer effects on normal, healthy cells. They are used in conjunction with traditional chemotherapy to improve patient outcomes and they have fewer side effects than chemotherapy drugs. Biologic medications use the body's immune system or hormonal system to attack cancer cells in various ways. Biologic drugs have improved survival in women with breast cancer.
