
Six Symptoms of IBS
People with IBS experience frequent abdominal discomfort or pain, symptoms are relieved after a bowel movement, and there are changes in bowel movement frequency and stool form or appearance. Symptoms of IBS often come and go or may be constant. In women, IBS may worsen during the menstrual cycle.
1. Abdominal Pain or Discomfort
Abdominal pain and discomfort are key symptoms used to diagnose IBS. Symptoms of pain or discomfort may be felt anywhere in the abdomen, ranging from the hips up to the chest. Symptoms may change over time. Patients may experience cramping, stabbing, or sharp pain. In a study by the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), 80% of participants reported pain symptoms.
2. Constipation
Constipation is a common symptom of IBS. Constipation involves reduced frequency of bowel movements, difficulty passing stool, feeling of not being able to completely empty bowels, or wanting to pass stool but not being able to.
3. Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common symptom of IBS. It involves sudden urges to have a bowel movement, loose stools, and increased frequency of stools. Some patients may experience loss of bowel control or soiling.
