What is Effexor XR and how does it work

Effexor XR is an antidepressant that increases the concentration of neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine) in the central nervous system (brain). It is an extended release formulation of Effexor (venlafaxine) that is administered once daily.

• In 8 and 12 week studies Effexor XR was better than placebo in reducing symptoms of depression.

• In 6 and 8 week studies Effexor XR was better than placebo in reducing symptoms of anxiety.
• Effexor was more effective than placebo in reducing symptoms associated with social anxiety disorder.

What are the side effects of Effexor XR

Common: constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sexual side effects, sleepiness, sweating, and weakness

Serious: Suicide, mania, serotonin syndrome, seizures, high blood pressure, low blood sodium, bleeding, severe skin reactions. Abrupt withdrawal can cause symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, and mood changes.

• Warfarin
