How Effective are SGLT2 Inhibitor Drugs?

How effective is Jardiance?

986 patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and HbA1c between 7-10% were studied in a 24-week trial. They received Jardiance 10 mg, Jardiance 25 mg, or placebo (a sugar pill).

  • Jardiance 10 mg group: 35% achieved an HbA1c <7%, a decrease of 19 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose, and a body weight decrease of 2.8%.
  • Jardiance 25 mg group: 44% achieved an HbA1c <7%, a decrease of 25 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose, and a body weight decrease of 3.2%.
  • Placebo group: 12% achieved an HbA1c <7%, a decrease of 12 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose, and a body weight decrease of 0.4%

How effective is Invokana?

A 52-week, double-blind study enrolled 1,450 patients with type 2 diabetes who were inadequately controlled on metformin monotherapy. They received Invokana 100 mg or 300 mg, or glimepiride as an add-on therapy to metformin. The reductions in HBA1C were 0.82% for Invokana 100 mg, 0.93% for Invokana 300 mg, and 0.81% for glimepiride. Invokana 300 mg provided a greater reduction from baseline in HbA1C compared to glimepiride, and the relative treatment difference was -0.12%. Also, treatment with Invokana 100 mg and 300 mg daily showed more weight reduction as compared to glimepiride. 

How effective is Farxiga?

A total of 485 previously untreated subjects with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and an HbA1c between 7-10% were studied in a 24-week trial. They were placed in a group either taking Farxiga 5 mg, Farxiga 10 mg, or placebo (a pill containing only sugar).

In the Farxiga 5 mg group, 50.8% achieved an HbA1c <7% and a decrease of 28.8 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose. In the Farxiga 10 mg group, 44.2% achieved an HbA1c <7% and a decrease of 24.1 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose. In the placebo group, 31.6% achieved an HbA1c <7% and a decrease of 4.1 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose

SGLT2 Inhibitors and Weight Loss

Invokana and weight loss

In one study the weight loss achieved after 52 weeks of treatment was 4.2% for Invokana 100 mg and 4.7% for Invokana 300 mg. The baseline average weight was 86.8 kg in the Invokana 100 mg group and 86.6 kg in the Invokana 300 mg group.  

Farxiga and weight loss

A total of 182 subjects with type 2 diabetes were evaluated on the change in total body weight (TBW) and were treated with a combination of Farxiga 10 mg with metformin or placebo with metformin. After 24 weeks, the Farxiga group had an average weight reduction of -2.96 kg versus -0.88 kg in the placebo group. After 102 weeks, the Farxiga group had an average weight reduction of -5.43 kg versus -2.12 kg in the placebo group.

Jardiance and weight loss

In a 24-week trial, a body weight decrease of 2.8% was observed in the group taking Jardiance 10 mg and a decrease of  3.2% in weight was observed in the Jardiance 25 mg group. The placebo group achieved a body weight decrease of 0.4%.

Jardiance cost
